[newbie] Post Server Installation Commands?

I have performed a server installation of version 7.02 successfully (I
think).  I was able to reboot and login as root.  However any of the
standard, unix/linux commands are not being recognized in the console (e.g.
ls, md, ..).  What am I doing wrong?  Do I have to log in from another
workstation?
