I just had this problem and fixed it buy un-ticking an option in kppp
setup.

I had kppp configured with the correct DNS addresses for the
nameservers of the ISP's I use.

Every time I established a connection via kppp none of the "internet
aware" desktop applications would work. Netscape, the KDE file manger
or kmail etc.

It turns out there is a tick box on the kppp setup screen that is to
do with hostnames, down the bottom left of one of the screens. Can't
remember what it is called exactly as I am at work on Windows at the
moment.

Anyway if it is set, try un-ticking the box. With it ticked I think
your pc assumes the name of the ISP (or something like that) which
means it is talking to itself and does not work.
