http://www.netcraft.com/whats/ (...that site runnin)
www.aol.com is running NaviServer/2.0 AOLserver/2.3.3 on Solaris
Now this is all mostly conjecture on my part. Some time ago AoL
was heavily tied in with MicroSoft, and used IE as it's browser.
Windoze was needed to connect, but most Linux users at the time
didn't really care since AoL was looked on by most Net users with
disdain. There were some convoluted work-arounds to get Linux to
work with AoL (IIRC), but they didn't work well.
Then AoL bought Nutscrape. NS was also developing their own
server software. This was continued as NS/AoL server software.
As far as Linux goes, this made connecting even more troublesome,
but I believe I've heard it's possible. Again, doesn't work very
well, slow at best. I might remember the solution involves 'wine'
or some other Windoze emulation scheme (?)
FWIW, I also understand that Juno is run on NS
www.juno.com is running Netscape-Enterprise/4.0 on Solaris
.... and from NetCraft's server survey:
iPlanet is the sum of sites running iPlanet-Enterprise,
Netscape-Enterprise, Netscape-FastTrack, Netscape-Commerce,
Netscape-Communications, Netsite-Commerce & Netsite-Communications.
Looking at the graph, altho NS servers are up very slightly last
month, their overall place on the Net is minor and generally
shrinking. Looks like NS sold out at just about the right time ;)
If it wasn't for Juno and AoL, NS servers would prob'ly be history.
A little more opinion: A few years ago, AoL got mostly clueless
newbies as new signups. (hence the disdain by 'veteran' Net users).
Within 6 months, most realized that AoL sux, and moved to other
ISP's. Within the last year or so, AoL seems to have that turned
around. Either their service is better, or the newbies are even
more clueless ;->
