I understand that there are a few ISPs that will
support connecting through linux.  My experience is
that if you tell them you use linux they will stone
wall and get rid of you as fast as they can.  This is
with @home, USWest and a dialup ISP called WebAmerica
network.

I've managed to connect to USWest and @home through
linux but that is because in both cases, all I needed
to do was talk to the router/modem via a NIC.  With
AOL it's an entirely different story.  They use a
proprietary interface, software and protocol for their
users to connect to them.

I'm thinking that our friend should set up internet
connection sharing on his parents computer and then
connect through that computer from linux.  Once you
are connected to AOL you can blow off their browser
and use whatever one you want.
