Good answer. But if his /etc/inittab is set to run level 5, well then he
really can run either of those programs until he gets to login (as root).
at the lilo prompt, type "linux 3" (w/o quotes) to boot into a console mode.
Then follow the directions provided by J. Ricardo Rizzo above.
