Hi,
Linux will run along with this amount of ram, albeit a bit slow, for
a comparisation, what version of windows are you running?
A good low resource WM would be Blackbox, needs some getting used to.
KDE and Gnome will run much better with more ram.
As for the partition, will you run a dualboot (windows) on this machine?
If not, I would start with a swappartition of 96mb and everything else to /
