(Mandrake 7.2) 

Following suggestions, I tried successfully the following commands: 

locate filename 
rec sample.wav 
play sample.wav 

This didn't work: 

record sample.wav (no matter, as rec does it) 

Also, grecord (GUI program) started to work, but had this error message: 
"couldn't find sox" 
"can't open input file /dev/dsp : device or resource busy"
