[newbie] Information about System.map

Hello!
I'm a spanish user new in the task of kernel customization. I have read the
Kernel-HOWTO and I haven't found any information about a file, System.map
(located in /boot) I know that this file is needed (when I first upgrade my
kernel it gave me a lot of errors because  I didn't overwrite it with the
new kernel one) but I don't know exactly for what.

I would be pleased if someone could gently give more information about this
thing, and if it is possible to select among several system.map 's during
booting with LILO
