unfortunately i cant shed some light on this.......i can only say....i now 
have linux mandrake since version 6.2...(dunno when they implemented 
mandrakeupdate), and mandrakeupdate did  *never* work.....it didnt freeze 
my machine.....it was only working endlessly......endlessly searching for 
updates......so i gave up using it and now i download my updates manually 
from the "updates" directory of various mandrake mirrors.....

just a suggestion.....;)
