is there a break down of what each distro is known for. For example, I've
heard:

 Redhat = robust back-end server (American)
 SuSE = robust back-end server, easy install, 2nd best desktop to mandrake
(German)
 Mandrake = easiest install / best desktop (French)
 Slackware = small and tidy distro (American)
 VaLinux = robust enterprise backend server (competitor to redhat)
(American)
 Yellow Dog = runs on MAC platform (American)
 Corel Linux = ? (American/partly-owned by Microsoft)
 Debian = high-security Linux (?)
 Caldera = ? (?)
 Open Linux = ? (?)
 Turbo Linux = ? (?)
 MacMillian Linux(?) = ? (?)
  ... what else ...

But I really have no clue, this is just the impression I have picked up. It
might be totally off-base.

ps: My first linux distro was MCC Interim 0.2.5, does anyone remember that
one circa 1994-95. I bought a Packard Bell laptop which I uninstalled
something called Windows 3.1 (I had never heard of it) and innocently
installed MCC (with no problems) and played Astertoids and ran an LP mud on
it. I used kermit to dial-up (1200 baud) the school's VAX/VMS to read usenet
news... ah those were the days...

aside from Mandrake there are "no" other distros worthy of your attention
and admiration. However, there are of course ones that long to be what
Mandrake is and is becoming. SuSE, RedHat, Slackware, Caldera, VaLinux,
OpenLinux...these are the ones that I can think of right off the top of my
head at the moment.
