Hi,
I've tried out Linux for the first time. My collegue at work recommended Mandrake, so I downloaded the newest version (though it's still a beta)
I've got Windows ME installed from before, on my primary partition (have only got 1 disk).
The installation went OK, and rebooting seems OK too when I come too the boot option where I can choose between Windows and Linux (I'm using the boot manager that came with the Mandrake installation).
BUT
when I try to boot into Mandrake from there I get the following error (or Kernel Panic as it says) :
"Kmod failed to exec /sbin/modprobe -s -k block - major -33, errno = 2
Please append a correct "root=" boot option
Kernel panic : vfs: unable to mount root FS on 21:07 "
The machine freezes and I've got to reboot...
Since I'm a total newbie to Linux, these lines doesen't tell me anything, and I just don't know where to begin the troubleshooting...
I've tried to reinstall at least 10 times during the weekend, with the same result and error...
I've tried with different kinds of partitioning from one for" /home"," /root"," /"," /swp", too just 2 partitions containing the" /" partitioning and the" /swp" partitioning...
Well it says that I've got to append a correct "root =" option, but that's kind of impossible for me as a newbie... And how come the installation says that "installation completed sucsessfully" (or something like that) when Mandrake rebootes after finishing copying all the installation files to the harddrive.
If needed, this is my hardware :
mb : Abit Be6 II
CPU : celeron fcpga 566@850Mhz
HD : IBM ATA100 30Gb (ide)
cd-rom : plextor (scsi)
cd-writer : yamaha (scsi)
Sound : Soundblaster 128pci
Graphics : 3dfx voodoo 3
I'd really appreciate some help ;)
In the meanwhile I'm gonna try the 7.2 version of Mandrake ;)
