Looks like you went ahead and did what I was going to suggest. Since
you're a newbie, in their very early stages, I would suggest against a
beta release. I think once you've become more familiar with Linux and
become more and more comfortable, then you can do some beta testing.
But for every day use and true familiarity learning, a beta release of
anything isn't in your best interest.

Try starting with Mandrake 7.2. Go with the workstation install to
start with. That would probably be your best options. It installs
pretty simply and pretty smooth. You can go through and configure a few
things in the install like modem dial up, or network adapter. Which
ever you so choose.

As for your Beta 8 error message... I'm not sure what to say. I did
download the beta over the weekend but haven't installed it. I was
going to put an extra hard drive in one of my machines at home and then
install on that. But that machine's been up 18 days with out a burp and
I felt remissed to take it down. So I've not encountered your error
message and I don't know what has changed in the new version to really
help. But I suggest you stick with 7.2 for a while. Even after 8 is
released in the next few months. Stick with 7.2 until you're
comfortable and then switch over and do a developmental server install
in 8.0. That way you can progress as you're ready with more things on
your machine "play with."

I hope that helps, and good luck with your new install. I think you'll
find that it will run very smoothly.
