Konqueror gives an error everytime you access an https page, probably
because it was compiled for a different version of openssh than is
provided in LM 8.0. The message given is "The process for $WEBPAGE died
unexpectedly". Try for instance www.usaa.com.

LILO keeps messing with my partition Ids.

It's really annoying to go and download video drivers (nvidia) and java
for Konqueror and who-knows-what-else-I'll-need. what if I had no
network connection? shouldn't I be able to get more than half a system
off my install?

If the network connection is unplugged, system response time is horrible.

There is no help for the new Software installer. It would be nice to
have some, because 8.0's software update (unlike 7.2) is by default
broken, not pointing to a valid updating site. I've poked around a
little for the proper place, but haven't been easily able to locate it.
For that matter, it isn't immediately evident how to get it to stop
looking for CDROMs, and rather just work off of a local copy (which
directory do I tell the thing to look for?). There should be an RPM site
already loaded, since a newbie won't know where to look for RPMs.

Where'd the root tux icon go on startup? I kinda liked him...

Though Konqueror is put forward as the universal solution for browsing,
it isn't there yet:

* when printing through CUPS to an HP4M, starts printing on half-lines
and ends on half-lines every other page.

* java support I haven't found to be satisfactory. It just works in
Netscape. It doesn't in Konqueror.

* zooming doesn't always affect all text. The whole point to zooming is
to be able to see unreadable text.

* there's no CVSing or diffing through Konqueror

Overall, it feels like an operating system designed to make CLI work
faster, but leaves the GUI user hanging. Consider for instance the user
help. The only good user documentation on the GUI of LM is out on
www.mandrakeuser.com. And I still haven't seen anywhere that explains
that the programs with "Drake" or "Drak" are Mandrake-specific. Yes, it
may seem intuitive to you and me, but it hasn't been to others. Another
example: finding the hardware address of the ethernet card. Any clues as
to where to look? I had to (first figure out that eth0 was my ethernet
device and) grep /var/log/dmesg (once I found that) for eth0. Where the
information should be is in the Hardware/Hardware section of the Mandrake
Control Panel.

What I would like to see in Mandrake is an operating system that gives a
usable GUI, by itself, from which users can start migrating to CLI for
power using. But there isn't even any migratory help. A "click here for
how to do the same thing on the command line" is nowhere to be found.
Instead I have to read massive amounts of information on unix, when I'm
only looking for one command. We have some context help. Why not
context command help?

Alright, I'm calling off the ranting dogs.
