It might help to provide the list with more information: 

1. Is this drive IDE, SCSI or USB?

2a. If IDE, which controller (first, second, additional) and position 
(master, slave) is it on?  What else is on the controller?

2b. If SCSI, what controller (make, model) are you using?  What is the device 
ID assigned to the CD-writer?  What other devices (if any) are on the same 
controller?

2c. If USB, I don't know if it's possible to use it as a CD-writer.  (I 
haven't managed to get my HP 8230 to work yet; then again, I haven't tried 
very hard either.)
