Question for the list: Are the disks on ebay copies of downloaded
CDs do you suppose? Can you sell copies of a distribution that you
get for free? I know you can build your own distro if you know how,
but is it legal to sell copies of a distro?
As for the question of buying the powerpack for $80 I wouldn't let
the support be a factor. I've had multiple problems and the phone
support hasn't been able to offer me anything that helped. The last
time I called the guy tells me he's in a Microsoft OS and has to
reboot before he can help me - this on my long distance from hawaii
time. After he couldn't help me he told me he'd call back - never
did that I know of. They can't receive email, and they can't access
their own "web support" so when you enter all your infor there when
you register, you'll just have to provide it again when you call.
The web support is no better than this list - in fact this list is
probably far better. On the web support page "Mandrake Expert" you
are limited to 2000 characters so you'll never be able to describe
your problem or system in any detail so all the replys were requests
for more information or suggestions to try something I had already
tried.
The two manuals, which do indeed have good info in them, are
available free of charge in html or pdf format from the web site.
Where I think the $80 is worth it is all the extra software you get -
most of which can just go on your computer during installation so you
avoid what I think is a major pain in the O'kole downloading and
figuring out how to install.
In my case, with all the problems I'm having - problems no one seems
to have any answer for - I wish I would have spent my $80 on another
distro. It just doesn't seem to work well on my particular (pun)
computer. But now that I have bought it I'm determined to get the
thing working whatever it takes - and I'm learning a lot in the
process.
I hope my gripes and kudos will be useful in helping you decide
whether the boxed set is for you or not.
