These are some tricks I have learned that will 1) increase the likelihood of not having to ask for help 2) increase the liklihood that someone will be able to help 1) File permissions...when the program wont run, device wont allow access, the first place to check is the permissions. Even log in as root and try them there. 2) Go you http://www.google.com, search for the error message, or the hardware type (such as "hp5200 usb scanner linux"). These type specifc searches usually lead to great information like usenet posts, web pag how tos. 3) RTFM...read the fu****g manual....man pages, how to everything. Still XXXXXXX wont work, no solution so you better ask 1) For a hardware question...how do i configure my scanner?? is not a good idea. Be specific, "how do i configure my hp5220 usb scanner in mandrake8.?" Now thats something we can work with. 2) Let us know you what you have tried so far...."ive checked my permissions, found a webpage thats says something about a module,". Those who have tried to help themselves seem to get outside help quicker. 3) dont quit trying on your own, I have posted up to 4 followups to my own problem with additional information. BTW I finnally found my own solution and posted it, then had others thank me for helping them by posting my solution. 4) Oh yeah, have fun..if you arent enjoying learning linux, then maybe you should look at that too rob
