I assure you that I have never underestimated the task of installing a network but, so far, I have been able to manage with Win Nt and 2k ( I even got some REAL help from Bill's people in Milan, but this was four or five years ago, when they were still willing to give some useful advice.....) 1. yes, I have TC/IP installed (and NetBEUI as well) 2. I am using static numbers (so far I have used 10.0.0.1 10.0.0.2, 10.0.0.3 for the three machines I have-there is a forth one, but is presently idling...). Analogx gives me ability to download files from Internet anf to browse the net from each PC. My master PC is an AMD 700 with Win2k installed, connected with external ISDN adapter to Internet. 3. I left .hosts.deny file empty. I made sure no IP or name was in. I will carefully examine your smb.conf file ,to compare it with my present one and with the other smb.conf files I have around from different sources and get the most out of it. Meanwhile I would ask you: 1.How do I find a possible difference in name between DNS names and Netbios names? 2. You wrote :hosts allow = 192.168.0.2, 127. . Is the comma before 127 correct ? Does it mean from 2 to 127 , as I presume? ( I read somewhere that by writing 192.168.0. -leaving out the last digit(s) -would mean from 0 to 255. 3. I read that Samba does not support WIn2k domains. My network has only one workgroup (named, guess,....workgroup-but I am going to change it soon). I have never bothered with domains. However, I tried to add "localdomain" to the PC name which is acting.- provisionally- as LM server: it is a 1.2AMD with 356 Mb memory 30 gig+ 5 gig HD(Linux is on this last one, in two-actually three, with swap- Linux partitions, made with Partition Magic and using Boot Magic 4. I have just downloaded Samba 2.0.7 (Mandrake distro version is 2.0.5: will it help installing it?) I hope you will not be too annoyed by my questions, but , so far, you have given me much help and I am sure that with yur valuable help I'll come out from these problems, as I have always in the past since the times of Basic and CP/M Assembler, when I had to make my own home brewed OS- DOS did not exist back in 1979! Thanks again. I am anxious to read your next e-mail. Andrea I sent "etharp" the above message (which I partly
edited now to avoid reaching unbearable e-mail dimensions). Possibly I
should have sent it to [EMAIL PROTECTED] ,but
it came out as a natural answering to the sender's address. So far (unless I
missed it, among so many e-mails which arrive every day) I have not yet got an
answer:was the e-mail received?
Thanks again for your kindness in bearing up with
me!
