Great answer Dave.  I'm wondering if the originator of this question
realizes that just because his computer boots up and "locks up" he may still
be able to gain access through a different terminal session?  He didn't state
if he tried changing terminals (Alt-Ctrl-F1 or F2, or F3, etc...).
