Years ago, well back around 1990 I was involved in the UK BBS scene (I still
miss Fidonet to be honest!). Anyway, we ran a fairly large BBS in Lancashire
called "Red Rose" and I was the Co-Sysop. I used to handle the questions
we'd get from some users regarding their modem settings and whatnot, trying
to get the best throughput on a 9600 or maybe a 14.4k connection. We used
USR Couriers exclusively on the BBS mainly because they'd connect to
*anything* you threw at them.

At the time, the Sportsters were beginning to appear - the first really
cheap modem which was capable of 14.4k connects. At the time I think they
were somewhere around 150 UKP, which sounds a lot these days, but they were
half the price of the Couriers we used. The first batch which hit the UK
were dreadful. If you did manage to make a connection with them they'd lose
it at the drop of a hat.

Anyway, to get to the point, if you are going to buy an external hardware
modem, and you can afford it, you'll not go too far wrong by investing a few
quid into a decent USR/3Com modem. Since 3COM bought USR up, the quality has
fallen IMHO, but they still rule the roost when it comes to making and
holding a connection.

I think the Courier we use (and I still do use on my Linux box at home) is
STILL around 250 pounds - you get what you pay for I think...

BTW, Lurker, I'm currently working for Unisys - I believe Burroughs are the
parent company - yes?

        Dexter, LURKER again,
I find the USR's to be far above the others, of course that is all I
have
used except for a WinMDM HSP56 that I have NOT tried to make work on

Linux. From what I have been told most ISP's, which I use, are
using a USR
bank and when you connect all thingys will work faster and better
because
they speak the same. Others some times need a small script or
special
commands to encourage them to talk to one another. NO, I do NOT
work for
any manufacturer of CPU parts, I am Retired, worked in Electronics
Test
Equipment for about 18 years and my last 10 was with CPU's,
different OS's
than DOS or Linux. I was in a "BTOS", Bouroghs Task OS, on a
MINI-MainFrame/w 34 dumb terminals. Did do some surfing before the
"WWW"
was created, using IP addys and UNIX commands, which I found to be
more fun
than the "WWW", which the only thingy I can say for it is it is
easier for
those that are NOT familiar with ###.###.###.### type of addys.

Hey, that is all I know about Linux at this time. Double checking
does NOT
hurt, I have done some of that on my system and found thingys turned
back
on, that does NOT figure either, plus I go for the easiest FIRST.

Thank You for at least looking into that as a possibility, you never
know!

Give http://www.usr.com or http://www.3com.com a look see, and maybe
ask
        some questions.
