i had some odd thngs too when doing what you have just done

don't know anout zip drives but
it is possible to be restricted as root because root has to follow 
permissions as well, it's just that nothing can stop root from changing 
permissions that it doesn't like!

i was lazy, instead of learning the syntax for the .bashrc file in my home 
directory, i copied over the one from /root, that worked a treat
