I have the same setup here,and have seen this error. For what it's worth(which ain't much)..I suspect it has something to do with the kernal patch which must be downloaded from the win4lin site in order to work with 8.1 a corrupted download perhaps. I'm using win4lin ver. 3.0 btw.
My personel fix for this was to uninstall win4lin and go again,I may have re-installed 8.1 as well somewhere down in the process but I'd suspect that the 8.1 install is probably ok.
