Well i recently bought a Quickcam 3000 PRO from logitech without knowing there support behaviour =/ it is supported starting at kernel 2.4.13 . Since it has Phillips ingredients. Phillips webcams are supported (allmost all AFAIK ) they use the kernel module "pwc" (so does my logitech ) but dont buy the logitech its a good cam but you will have to wait or hack better support for it . Example: i get the camera working fine with a small picture (nokia-display-size on a 1280x1024 screen res) that is because you need to uncompress the signal to get the resolution higher (it SHOULD support 480x600) but to uncompress you need to compile your own kernel with the module "pwcx" wich you get at http://www.smcc.demon.nl/webcam/ (a recommendable site ) Recommendable is to use a analog camera and a tv grabbercard (bttv) but ofcourse those are more expensive.
