Hi Ed,

First a correction, the unmounting error occurs on  dev/hda1 and dev/hda5
(not hda6).

Second, to answer you questions:

1. from the prompt (not in any windowing system)  I type "exit".  this takes
me to a promp asking me for a login.
2. i turn the computer off

I don't use any command to turn the computer off - so I don't get any info
on shutdown.
