You should get a normal > shut down. HTH and sorry for butting in Ed. I have not looked at the halt command Ed but I would suggest 'man shutdown' as the command to use when you are root. As there is a fair amount there rather do a 'man shutdown | more' command. I am now using GUI shutdown but if I can remember there was a command like shutdown -o now which had to be issued. The man command will tell you what the correct syntax is though. Do not this example as I am unsure of the syntax.
