Frank, I used a Diamond ISA 56k modem for awhile, and it worked fine. You're
right about plug 'n play, make sure its turned off. Do a:

cat /proc/interrupts

to make sure that you don't have an IRQ conflict. If you do have a conflict,
you can turn a few things off if you are not using them. For example - USB,
serial port (com) 1, 2, or both...etc,...

Some MB Bios's will allow you to reserve an IRQ for an ISA slot. My Gigabyte
MB does this...

If its not an IRQ conflict, then I dunno buddy...
