True the default window size is small, but if you grab that little grey box at the bottom right of the window you can drag it out and resize it. > 2) i choose the packages that i want upgraded - and it begins to search for > the packages - after a while it replies "an error > occured while fetching package xxxxx" Yes that seems to happen. Some mirrors seem to be considerably worse than others. sourceforge for example has always given me trouble in that respect. Since I switched to sunite.se, I have had no trouble. > despite of this mandrake-update isnt able to fetch the file - this > SUCKS ! 3) sometimes i am not able to start mandrake-update at all - it > loads partially - leaving me with a grey main-window I find just getting a few files at a time has more chance of success than a mega upgrade. > > another thing i hate about the "desktop"-linux is that there is no browser > that can view websites properly. > regardless which fonts/font-size/browser i use - i always get bad-looking > fonts - not so smooth like ms-ie shows. > Well my fonts look terrific, on my desktop and in all my browsers, Konqeuror, Opera, and Galeon, and I wonder why yours does not. One thing might be worth checking. If you open kde Control Center>LookNFeel>Fonts Open up the drop down list of fonts. If you do not see adobe-helvetica, and mdk-helvetica in that list, then you may be suffering from a KDE 'bug' I had myself recently. The symptoms would be really ugly fonts, and the font appearance would improve if I disabled alti-aliasing in kde. The fix is simply to delete the file ~/.kde/share/config/kdeglobals Next time I logged in the file got created again, and my fonts became beautiful with every font appearing in the list. > has anybody of u been able to get mandrake-update working - or to get a > browser that shows smooth good looking fonts ? > Yes and yes > dont misunderstand me - i like linux - and i am using a linux server that > handles mail-dns-samba-antivir-ftp-telnet and so on. > but this is console - and it works well... > but what does not work - in my eyes - is the X-part of linux....so - are u > experiencing the same problems i do - or is it just my lack of ability to > get things working smooth under X ? Could it be a video card deficiency? My fonts look great in all 3 of my computers, one with Geforce256, one with Geforce2MX, and the 3rd a crummy old laptop with heaven knows what graphics chip. HTH derek
