Yes.

No, it looks like a gzipped driver :) When modprobing a module or editing
/etc/modules.conf don't use a .o or .o.gz extension, don't worry about them
otherwise.

Well, RH7.2 and LM8.1 use different kernels and asssociated modules (version
differences and distro specific patching), and _both_ distro's can use either
the kernel(AKA OSS/Free) or the ALSA drivers for sound. From a previous post I
understood LM8.1 HardDrake recognised your card and wanted to use ALSA, what
went wrong? And don't forget to raise volumes and unmute relevant channels,
ALSA safely mutes everything.
You can try 'adding the 'sound' lines to the LM /etc/modules.conf' of course.
But, in your earlier post you said:
----------------
sndconfig says "ESS Technology|ESS 1969 Solo 1 Audiodrive is not
supported"
----------------
Sndconfig is the (originally RedHat) setup utility for the OSS/Free drivers.
Maybe RH7.2 has newer versions then LM8.1 (sndconfig and drivers)...
I hope to avoid confusion by adding that esssolo1 is the OSS/Free driver and
snd-card-es1938 is the ALSA one.
