Is it a hub or a router? If it's a hub you should be able to ping
from one box to the other.. If ping fails start there.

Your IP's are both in the same subnet aren't they? With ,presumably,
the cable device acting as the gateway if the subnets and routing
aren't right the devices will not be able to cross-talk.

Devices which connect from cable modems to a network may have routing
setup that stops the 'hub' connections cross-talking (i've got a Cisco
unit set up that way).

If you can't find the spec's for your hub to see if it's got routing
built in you could test this theory by buying or borrowing a cheap hub
and temporarily plug your network leads into that. If you can ping
with the cheap hub installed but not with the cable-hub then your
cable-hub is a router which needs re-configuration.

Good luck
