as root: #chmod 2777 /the_location_of_your/public_directory

You must have the same username and password on your XP and your Mandrake 
accounts

encrypt passwords = Yes  #in samba.conf

Unix_name = SMB_yourusername #in /etc/smbusers

You're making really good progress.  It took me 3 days to get samba going the 
first time I did it!
