I have to admit that one of the things I like about Linux is the ability to mess around with the innards of my system and learn interesting stuff that may one day be useful. However, I do not like struggling to get my hardware working, and don't think anyone else does. Hardware compatibility problems generally arise because writing device drivers is a long, difficult and usually dull process. Fortunately, an increasing number of hardware manufacturers are co-operating with, or actively supporting the open source community in this area, so such problems should become a thing of the past.
