Andy, as far as I remember, try this : reboot the system, and when the 
spash-screen pops up, press <Esc>. Now you have a text-only screen. Type 
"linux single" (without the quotes, of course).

This will boot you into a very minimalistic system as root. Be careful here. 
Now, issue the command : "update-menus -v". You'll see the progress scroll 
by. When finished, type : "shutdown -r now". That worked for me.

A peculiar thing is that the man-page for "update-menus" refers to a 
Debian-system. Maybe that's why you'll have to use the "single" parameter ? 
Who knows ?
