It made a great diff for me! I use vnc from mymdk8.1 to win98 and I've made some file transfer to test the speed, here are the results... Using the nfs to compare and a ~700Mb file to transfer I got 21 minutes to copy the file from one machine to another (10mbps) and, ~7 minutes using a 100mps. With vnc I've downloaded full iso's (mdk8.2) from win98 machine. My mdk8.1 box with firewall and making NAT... average dl speed 25k to 28.9kbps! The very same on my Linux box (with 100mpbs). With 10mbps the maximum dl speed I got was around 16~17kbps! Of course, your mileage may vary ;-) Ricardo Castanho >i'm remote accessing my Mandrake Linux box thru vnc. >it's almost unbearably slow. >the speed doesn't seem to differ much regardless of color depth, >i've tried 8, 15 and 16, so for now, i'm using 15. > >i'm wondering if upgrading my 10mbps hub to a 100mbps >switch will make much of a diff, >since the cpu utilization on both the server/client doesn't >seem to be much, around 20-30% > >or is my bottleneck somewhere else? > >thanks. > >Server >Mandrake Linux 8.2, default install >VNCserver run from command line >vncserver -geometry 900x700 > >Client >MS Win98 >VNCclient 3.3.3r9 from http://www.uk.research.att.com/vnc/ > > -- ========================================================== Linux user # 102240 => Machine # 96125 => Seti@home user ==========================================================
