I'm located in the countryside of Colorado, and have satellite as my
only option. My Direcway service provides (for a hefty installation fee of
$600), the dish (squared off oval of circa 60cm wide by 30cm high.), and the
satellite modem. They run coaxial cable from the dish into the house
(luckily I have a drop acoustic ceiling all the way to my computer room),
which attatches straight into the back of the satellite modem. I have the
signal running to my Linksys router via a Cat5 cable, and share the signal
with all of my computers.
The only problems I've had were:
1. Convincing the boneheads at tech support in New Delhi (or Calcutta) that I
couldn't see past the roofline of my house to see the satellite they had me
assigned to. It took me a week to find a technician that would give
re-assigning to the proper satellite a try
2. The Fair Access Policy, which limits me to 140Mb of download, before the
"broadband signal" throttles itself back to "modem speed" (ambitious
statement, since it is really 1-2 kb/s once it slows down
3, Clearing the dish off multiple times during our latest blizzard. It seems
the signal doesn't bounce back to the horn too well when it hits snow
4. Impossibility of using Bittorrent for anything Mandriva-related
All in all, better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick (but not much),
or dial-up.
