Yes, gnome-cd-properties did the trick. I was able to turn off all the 
auto-launching. Thanks.

I also learned something useful from this little program: the auto-launching 
is actually controlled by the scripts in /etc/dynamic/user-scripts. These 
scripts (if not disabled by gnome-cd-properties) actually control what app 
gets run in the various cases (blank disk, audio cd, data cd, dvd). 

So if you want to change the behaviour (e.g. have a different app 
auto-launched), you can edit these scripts (as root, of course).

I think this also explains why the KDE config settings for what app to run 
don't have any effect. My Amarok is broken (separate story, I won't get into 
it here), so I wanted to launch Kaffeine to play audio cds. I changed the KDE 
setting, but it had no effect. I meant to ask about it here, but never got 
around to it.
