[newbie] Card reader

I have a Memory Stick USB 2.0 card reader/writer which I use in  my Sony 
camera.  I have two ports on the front of the box and four at the back. 
 How are there numbered in terms of the hardware listing in harddrake?

I have plugged the cardreader (with memory card in it) in, nothing 
happens.  What do I need to please?
