Be assurred that 2.6.9 or later Mandriva kernels' comply to no more user space
access in areas like cd burning (the rr-scheduler and setpriority).

So, you'll have to be root just to burn a CD?? I can't see this sitting too well
with the user base.

I wasn't too happy about it either. As I said before tho, you can still burn as user, but since cdrecord is denied permission to the rr-scheduler and setpriority kernel functions, there is a high risk of buffer underruns. I really can't remember exactly when Mandrake dropped the kernel patch that allowed cdrecord as user access to 2.6.x kernels.

Several times I've forgotton to su to root before starting a burn. Each time the buffer dropped dangerously low (< 5%), a few times burnfree was called as the buffer fill dropped to -0-. Burning as root my fifo and buffer stay above 95%, usually 98 to 100%, and of course burnfree is never needed.

Also I've noticed, as user even tho I had speed set to 24x, cdrecord soon slowed to 16x or less (data CD's). As root the entire burn is at 24x. (burner is 52x, media is 48 or 52x, mostly 52)
