I've been looking at prices etc. Defintely affordable. Just to make
sure I'm on the right track - something described as 8 port network hub
with RJ45 cable, would be appropriate?

That will work, but if you see something called an 8 port network switch that
will work better as it manages the flow of traffic and prevents collisions.
In other words it has a faster process. They are also not very expensive. HTH
