I've ended up installing Kanotix onto both boxes here, because it was the only version of Linux that gave an hda1 icon on the desktop, giving this newbie a visible path to the files on hda1. But it seems like there is still some kind of disarray in files that tie the hardware to the GUI.
For example, on my Athlon 1.2GHz, USB keys showup as sda1,
but on the Dell Optiplex with P2 350MHz, a USB key registers on the system
but does not show on the desktop like the other memory devices.
Eventually accessed some (but not all) of the sda1 files on the Dell by searching the file/mnt directory, but if someone could suggest a way to get icons onto the desktop, that would be cool.

Also I've installed Thunderbird from a downloaded tar file,
and would like to have an icon either on the desktop or on the bottom panel,
because going through the Kde menu system is a bit like threading a needle.
