Assuming you use KDE: Right click on your desktop>configure desktop>behavior>check the box for "display device icons on desktop">choose which types to display by checking the boxes
If the icon is already on the start menu, just drag it to the desktop and choose "copy here" For devices, right click on the desktop>create new>hard disk>choose what device it is from the dropdown box | Also I've installed Thunderbird from a downloaded tar file, | and would like to have an icon either on the desktop or on the bottom | panel, | because going through the Kde menu system is a bit like threading a needle. Start>Configuration>Configure your computer>type your root password>System>Menudrake>choose "system menu">highlight "Networking">then "Mail">"Add application">type the title "Tbird">and the path to the executable>choose an icon>Save But, what is wrong with Kmail??? Or Evolution?? Tbird is kind of bloated, but it does import the Outlook mail folders pretty well (at least it used to, haven't used it in a long time)
