The latest edition 2005LE should run fine on those machines.
Linux develops so rapidly that it really is worth getting hold of the latest
version, and do not worry, there have been no reports of hardware being
damaged by it. That incident with the LG CD-ROMS was the first and the last
case I have ever heard of.

You can get 2005LE from a CD copying service such as http://linuxcd.org/ or
you can download it from any Mandriva mirror such as this one
ftp://ftp.rediris.es/pub/linux/distributions/mandrake/iso/10.2/i586
Download either the 3 CD set, or just download the "Mini" version. It does a
basic install, and then completes the install by downloading over the
network.
Burn the downloaded files as "iso" images onto CD.

The only things the boxed set gives you that the downloaded edition does not,
are printed manuals, commercial drivers for some hardware such as Nvidia
graphics cards, and some commercial software. But all those drivers and
software can be found elsewhere quite easily.

Have fun

derek
