I have found this to be totally dependent upon the user.  Desktops, as a rule, 
last much longer than laptops due to the fact that people aren't lugging them 
around, dropping them, bouncing them around in cars, etc.  As for the 
particulars, if you routinely play audio cd's while the you are moving it 
around, that might account for the short lifespan since the drive is spinning 
and the heads are going to bounce up and down from the movement.  If you 
routinely move the laptop from place to place or hold it by the open display 
while moving it, that would definitely account for the hinges.  I used to 
service compaqs and still remember replacing displays for one sales guy at 
least every 6 months due to his constantly using the display as a handle to 
"show" people things.  Batteries tend to last longer with moderate use, heavy 
use will cause them to have shorter lifespans.

About the only advice that I would give is to buy a name-brand with a good 
warranty and treat it like it was made of glass.
