I have found this to be totally dependent upon the user. Desktops, as a rule, last much longer than laptops due to the fact that people aren't lugging them around, dropping them, bouncing them around in cars, etc. As for the particulars, if you routinely play audio cd's while the you are moving it around, that might account for the short lifespan since the drive is spinning and the heads are going to bounce up and down from the movement. If you routinely move the laptop from place to place or hold it by the open display while moving it, that would definitely account for the hinges. I used to service compaqs and still remember replacing displays for one sales guy at least every 6 months due to his constantly using the display as a handle to "show" people things. Batteries tend to last longer with moderate use, heavy use will cause them to have shorter lifespans. About the only advice that I would give is to buy a name-brand with a good warranty and treat it like it was made of glass. -- Bryan Phinney
