<>Hi folks,
I'm curious what you all consider a reasonable lifespan for a laptop.

Had an old one off manufacture model; the company moved into a different
area of manufacture, that lasted 8 years, and then the hardrive started
to show up bad sectors. Only 8MB of RAM and 850 MB hard drive. The
motherboard battery finally went, and so did the power pack battery. It
was the only machine I owned and ran while the generator was on while
doing other things, then drained the battery, crashing the system.
Windows 3.1
Have an Acer 1355LC Aspire and had it for 12 months. They state that the
Lithium-Ion battery will only do about 500 charges. Having learnt from
my old laptop, and every other battery that can get a memory, use it the
same way. 8 years would be nice to get again. But this machine is used
many more hours a day.
At the low battery warning, I save whatever I am doing, start closing
out of the programs, then play cards till the system crashes as the
battery is completely drained. On reboot it needs to correct all errors.
But as I use windows mostly at the moment, because I can't get the
internal modem or the PCMCIA modem or the USB to Serial cable to connect
through PPP or anything else to the net, it just needs to be done.
Windows, or if I just happened to be in Linux, picks up and restores the
file system on the next reboot and away I go again.
This laptop is used on generator and solar power and every day and night
at least 6 hours. I have not kept count of the amount of times that I
have sucked the battery flat and then allowed the charger to bring it
up. Having had some experience, due to my circumstances, I have used
this "drain completely" method on battery powered power tools etc, and
it is the best way to get years and years of battery life.
YMMV
Be well,
Charlie
