AHHH!! This got me on the right track. I had a peek at /etc/php.ini
before and missed this:

;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;
; Dynamic Extensions ;
;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;
;
; If you wish to have an extension loaded automatically, use the
following
; syntax:
;
; extension=msql.so

I removed the semicolon, restarted apache and now it works...
