That definitly doesn't sound good. At this point, I would download
http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/ and run the test for your brand of drive.
If it is not an IDE cable problem, then it sounds like the drive is
dieing. The hard drive test will tell you for sure.

I would back up any important data now, while you still can. Use your
Knopix CD and mount the partition Read-only for the backup - less chance
of corrupting data... Then, depending on what the test says, you may get
away with doing a repair of the drive. I wouldn't trust a drive too far
after that, but it is up to you. The drive is susposed to remap bad
sectors by itself, but once in a while they need help.
