You might want to install from plf vlc, mplayer and the mplayer gui
(maybe the mplayer plugin if you want embedded stuff in Firefox and
Mozilla), again get the plugins for each you need.
The plf packages have stuff that can't be included in the distro because
of patents, licensing, etc. So get the plf stuff wherever possible.
Kaffeine (using the Xine engine) works on these files, so does Mplayer.
