The first part was that you do not mount tape drives like you would a hard drive or a CD. Instead you use the device entry like you would another file. In the case of IDE hard drives, you would use the ht and nht devices. Your drive should be /dev/ht0 and /dev/nht0. The difference between the two is that /dev/ht0 will rewind the tape after completing the command, and /dev/nht0 will not. Not rewinding after a command is handy if you want to put more then one archive or backup on a tape.
If you are going to do much with tape drives, you realy need the mt-st package installed. You can then use "mt -f /dev/ht0 status" to check on the status of the drive. This is a good first step to verify that the proper modules are loaded, that there is a tape in the drive, and everything is ready to go. Once you are this far, you can then use tar or drakbackup to backup to the drive. For tar, you would use ether /dev/ht0 or /dev/nht0 for the name of the archive. (Tar was origional written to read/write tape archive. tar = Tape ARchiver.) Drakbackup has an option for backing up to tape. You would use /dev/ht0 for the device. I have not looked into drakbackup deep enough to see if it will handle more then one backup on a tape. If you do not have /dev/ht0, then you may have to run: modprobe ide-tape to load the driver. If this is the case, you can add this to /etc/modprobe.preload to have the driver loaded at boot. But it should be loaded for you. (I don't have any IDE tape drives right now to test this, but the SCSI tape module is working without adding anything.)
