What worked for me (10.1) was to open kppp, select configure, then device and 
and choose one of the ports from the dropdown menu -- some of which are USB 
connections. The modem was then configured and tested on the modem page. I 
never had to do the ln -s /dev/port /dev/modem drill. Caveat; My connection 
is straight serial the whole way (I'm a traditionalist in these matters), but 
I would think that the same technique would work with a USB connection.
