The adapter works all right in Windows. No problem at all.
As for the ESSID and key, I have multiple checked them and I am sure
they are the correct ones. I used them to check the adapter itself is
problem free in Windows. I am as surprised as you, specially because the
signal and the network link were excellent in Windows. And in my laptop
I have the wireless integrated adapter working great in Mandrake. I'll
wait for your feedback. In the meanwhile I'll also make a Google search
just in case I find something.

Sorry to take so long to get back to you - I had to think on this a bit.
As I see it, there are a couple of possibilities. One would be that you
have a problem in your config file. The one that has gotten me in the
past is the WIRELESS_IWCONFIG="key restricted" - if I forget the "s, it
does not work. (You have to remember to use the "s in MCC too...)
Actually, I didn't include that instruction because I don't have a
"restricted key" (actually, I don't even know what that could be). But, hey,
I took the advise of Ron (turn off encryption in the router) and I could
actually connect to the Internet. Problem is, that my laptop ceases to
receive and I lose the connection in it.
The second is that you need firmware for your NIC. I have one that needs
it, and if the firmware is missing, I get:
"3rdparty/at76c503a/at76c503-fw_skel.c: firmware
atmel_at76c505-rfmd2958.bin not found" in /var/log/messages. (It is a
pain having to remember that when I upgrade kernels.)
I shouldn't think this is the case, as I have connected successfully without
encryption. Or maybe you are right and I need a firmware update because
encryption is not handled successfully.
The third is that they changed the NIC without changing the model number
or the USB ID. That is not suspossed to happen, but it does... I am not
sure what you do in this case.
Perhaps this is ruled out by the fact that I can connect without encryption.
The driver is the correct one, I think, and apart from a mistake in writing
the encryption key, I do not see another source of problems in the
configuration. But I have checked so carefully the encryption key that I now
have not doubt it is the correct one.
I want to tell you that I highly appreciate your help and maybe I should
apologize for late replies, but I have to test what you tell me when time
permits.
