Version 7 or 8 used XFree86 not Xorg, but I think the config file is
the same, namely in /etc/X11/XF86Config. Of course you can't edit
that file without a monitor, so can't you get your hands on an old,
cheap CRT ?
If you can, go to XF86Config, scroll down to the section "Monitor".
Edit that file (as root) with the appropriate settings for your
flat panel, save it and then shutdown. Connect the flat and try
again.
I assume you use an analog connection ? - Digital probably weren't
supported in 7 or 8.
If this fails, you could try booting with a live CD, like Knoppix,
and research the settings in XF86Config. And while you are at it,
use Knoppix to save your data to a CD, external drive or some such.
Good luck.
