Thanks guys but tweaking the MTU didn't work. I tried default in
addition to 128, 296, 1280, 256, 178, 138. Any idea where I can
find/edit the modem command strings?
The "Kppp Statistics" are as follow at time of failure:
bytes in 1250149 bytes out 161509
packets in 1083 packets out 1118
vjcomp in 0 vjcomp out 0
vjunc in 1020 vjunc out 0
vjerr 0 nonvj 1118

It sounds like you may need to tweek the mtu and mru settings. I am not
sure exactly where to do this in Kppp, but I am sure it can be done. You
might try a settign of 576 and see if that helps...

do you know what modem init strings are?
you will need t find what init string your modem uses, and get that
string into KPPP or whatever you dial with. it is a string of commands
sent to the modem before the dial string to configure it. you ma find
this info in the booklet that came with your modem, or you may be able
to search the USR website with the model of your modem to get that info
